 BEST PRACTICES

Update on Maine's Best Practices to

Reduce and Prevent Restraint and Seclusion

Since 2013, I've been working with the Maine DOE and a small group of stakeholders to develop a best practices guide on how to reduce and prevent restraint and seclusion in Maine schools.

Just recently, part of the project, "Emergency Prevention and De-escalation Strategies" was released on the Maine DOE Restraint and Seclusion website. You can view it under "Resources and Materials".

This dream is not fully realized, so please keep posted! Next to come will be "Response to the Use of Restraint and Seclusion".

The following documents are available as hand-outs, just email me for printable copies!

LOW and SLOW:  Communication and Interaction Strategy for Schools

LOW and SLOW refers to a way in which adults approach a student when they're distressed or deregulated

(or becoming so). It is based on both the understanding of "fight or flight response" and the function of behavior.  These considerations are designed to potentially help students return to a regulated level.
